'It's time to get up!' Kirsty was shaking her. 'Uncle Jake says we've to be down for breakfast in a quarter of an hour.'

Shiona struggled to consciousness and rubbed her eyes. 'What time is it?' she mumbled hoarsely. She felt as though she'd been asleep for about five minutes!

'It's eight o'clock. Uncle Jake says it's late. He says we've got to be on the road by nine o'clock at the latest.'

With a huge yawn Shiona pulled herself upright. Then she reached out and hugged little Kirsty tightly. 'How are you feeling? Did you sleep all right?'

Kirsty nodded. 'Yes, and I'm hungry. Can I have toast and honey for breakfast?'

'Of course you can. You can have anything you like.' Shiona swung her legs down on to the carpet. 'I'll race you. Let's see who's dressed and ready first!'

Just under twenty minutes later, with Kirsty having won the contest easily, the two of them were heading downstairs to the breakfast-room. And, as they walked through the doorway of the big, sunny room, the dark-haired man at the table by the window glanced up from his copy of The Times.

He looked immaculate and well rested, as though he had slept for twelve hours instead of a scanty, meagre five. She had circles like bicycle tyres under her eyes, but there was no sign of even the faintest shadow beneath his!

Damn him! Shiona thought. How does he do it?

As Kirsty scampered towards him, Jake laid down his newspaper, kissed her on the cheek, then glanced up at Shiona. 'So you made it, after all.' His tone was lightly sarcastic. 'You looked as though you were set to sleep all day.'

She probably would have done if she had been left to her own devices! But she feigned disdain as she sat down opposite him. 'I have far too busy a day planned for anything so self-indulgent.'

Before he could comment a waitress arrived to take her and Kirsty's order for bacon and eggs and toast and honey. But once the woman had gone, Jake raised one dark eyebrow. 'Perhaps you wouldn't mind enlightening me as to what you're planning?'

Shiona paused before answering to pour some orange juice for Kirsty.

Then, her eyes on his face, she poured some for herself. 'Of course, it all rather depends,' she put to him in a wry tone, 'on the outcome of our visit to the police station. If they decide to arrest me and throw me in gaol, my plans will have to be drastically altered. . .'

She saw a flicker of something cross his eyes. Possibly amusement.

Possibly something else. He topped up his coffee-cup before answering, 'And what do you plan to do if they don't?'

Shiona shrugged. 'Catch the first flight to London. As I told you, there's a crisis on at the studio. They need me there to sort it out.'

He took a mouthful of his coffee. 'So that story you told me. . . You mean to say it was true, after all?'

'Of course it was true. Why would I lie to you?'

That struck him as funny.
